How to Ask Your Boss for a Raise

Irrespective of the age at which we start our career, at some point of time we find a balance between satisfaction and compensation. It is impossible to perform at work if you do not have the slightest interest in the job. Similarly, if the job fails to provide you monetary satisfaction, it will always affect your performance at work. How do you know when you deserve a raise, and how do you go about it?

You are confident of your skills. You deliver quality output in the fastest possible time. You often get a convincing nod every office presentation. The boss asks you to take charge when he is not around. You are definitely an asset. And because of that, you feel you deserve a raise. Here are some pointers that might help you in taking the right steps from your end.

Stand tall in your skills and confidence – Do not apologize that you need a raise. Instead, stand tall and be firm. You know your abilities, and imply to your boss that he knows it too. If you are tentative and show hesitations, you are signalling that you are also questioning your worth.

Do not ask the question – Even if you are ready to ask for a raise, do not directly “ask” for it. Do not ask “may I get a raise?” Lucky if the boss says yes. Rather, give him an option. For example, you can start by saying that you have been working beyond your job description and you strived for improvement and you will be happy to continue doing it for a raise of $500.

Make them see you are close to being indispensable – You work beyond your job description to the point that the boss can travel without worrying a thing because he has you around. Apart from the huge contribution you give the company, the boss, outside the work premises, benefits from your expertise as well. Make this as your leverage for the raise that you are requesting.

Wait for the answer – Like anyone else, the boss needs to think it over and even consult his colleagues about it. It is always not easy to arrive to a decision, so patiently wait. If the boss asks you to call his attention regarding the matter in two weeks, then schedule a meeting with him on the said date.

Be prepared for the answer – If the boss declines due to work performance issues, ask a detailed feedback. If they are valid, hone your skills more and improve in your areas of incompetence. If you believe in your competence and you see the reason as not valid, then decide if you will stay or go. Same goes with budget reasons. If the boss agrees that you deserve a raise but cannot grant it due to budget constraints, decide whether you will continue with his company or render your expertise somewhere else.

With a little tact and smartness, you can maintain the balance between money and job satisfaction and continue happily with your job. Don't hesitate to take the first step when you know that you deserve it.
