5 Reasons to Pursue a Career as an OBGYN

Also known as obstetricians, OBGYN doctors, specialize in women's health, reproductive issues and child birth. Those who wish to become an OBGYN must complete medical school and a four-year residency in a hospital pediatrics and OBGYN ward. Once college coursework and a residency have both been completed, the OBGYN candidate must then complete an exam and obtain a license to practice in his or her state of residence.

Like other doctors, OBGYN doctors work in a variety of settings, including major hospitals, medical clinics, private practice offices, non-profit medical groups and more. The salary you make as an OBGYN is often determined by your experience and current employment location.

While the road is long and tough for those who wish to become an OBGYN, the following five reasons to pursue a medical career as an obstetrician should be motivation enough to finish the requirements:

1. Higher Than Average Salary

Once residency has been completed, OBGYN's receive an annual salary of between $200,000 and $250,000. This salary is high for newly certified doctors who don't specialize in surgery. Obstetricians who have worked for a number of years often make well over $300,000, especially if they work for a major hospital network.

2. Career Outlook is Great

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, OBGYN and other similar physician careers are expected to grow by as much as 20% over the next decade. This means that prospective OBGYN doctors will enjoy a significant amount of job security during this time period. During the same time frame, salary levels are also expected to increase.

3. OBGYN Doctors Also Serve as Primary Care Physicians

OBGYN doctors don't have to stick to just practicing as obstetricians. Up to 60% of women use their OBYGN as their primary care physicians, allowing OBGYN doctors to broaden their practices. Because primary care providers are often chosen early on in a woman's adult life, they can provide better preventative care to help prepare their patients for pregnancy and child birth.

4. Work Satisfaction

One of the most rewarding experiences that anyone can have is bringing a child into the world. As an OBGYN, you'll be able to experience child birth on a regular basis and help prospective mothers make good decisions that will affect the health of their future newborns.

You could also specialize in high-risk pregnancies like maternal-fetal specialist Dr. Gilbert Webb (Source: USNews). This specialty deals more in depth with mothers with health complications during pregnancy. This would also include dealing with patients with histories of miscarriages, premature births, or preexisting conditions that could affect the health of the mother and baby.

As your experience in the field of OBGYN grows, you'll also be able to contribute more to the field itself and discover new methods that could be one day used as standard practices.

5. Improving the Overall Health of Women

OBGYN doctors not only assist with child birth issues, they also diagnose and attempt to cure other problems that are related to a woman's health.

Some major health issues that might be treated by an OBGYN doctor are menopausal symptoms, cervical cancer and breast cancer. Determining whether or not a woman has these types of health issues comes from performing regular checkups with a primary care provider or OBGYN doctor, and making a positive or negative diagnosis based on experience and training.

OBGYN doctors can also diagnose urinary tract infections and help with postpartum care. Their specialized training prepares them for any issues that relate to the OBGYN field.

Becoming an OBGYN is a task not easily achieved. Every year, thousands of people across the United States strive to finish their medical degrees and go on to complete residencies, but some just aren't prepared enough to move forward. Completing residency can be achieved by keeping your goals at all times, and remembering that OBGYN doctors enjoy long, rewarding careers that can are financially lucrative at the same time.
