Wong’s Pragmatic Theory

Wongs Pragmatic Theory: Advantages Over Disadvantages Pragmatism Education | Enroll

Discipline is the key to a productive classroom environment. It is important for a teacher to be in complete control of the classroom. If the teacher is in control then all he or she has to focus on is teaching.  However discipline is not always as easy as it seems. There are many restrictions on how a teacher is able to discipline students.

Wong’s Pragmatic Theory is one discipline model that is efficient and effective. But is there merit to Pragmatism in education? What are the advantages and disadvantages many ask.

Wong’s theory stresses that classroom procedures and rules are clarified at the very beginning of the school year.

Teachers are to instruct students how to follow rules and procedures. The teacher prepares lessons about the rules and procedures so that he or she can thoroughly teach the kids about the classroom procedures and rules.

The teacher learns how to manage the classroom with ease by making sure students know exactly what is expected of them.

The learning environment under Wongs Pragmatic Theory is very predictable.

An advantage to this pragmatism is that it provides effective classroom management. It allows the teacher to focus on education and application of lessons instead of constantly disciplining students.
The first couple of weeks are spent learning and practicing the procedures and rules.
As the year progresses of course the kids might forget a procedure or rule.
This is when the teacher reminds them of the classroom policies and has them practice what they have learned all over again.
This does not take as long as the initial implementation of of the policies.
The classroom under Wong’s Pragmatic Theory runs smoothly and efficiently.

The weakness’ of Wong’s Pragmatic Theory is that it leaves little room for spontaneity.

The kids know what to do most all of the time.  It also requires a lot of time training students during the first week or two of school. The disadvantages are that it takes away from teaching time and teachers have to spend a lot of time preparing the rules and procedures. Pragmatism in Education and the strengths of this program far outweigh the weaknesses. Yes, it takes time to prepare this plan and it takes time to teach the kids the procedures and rules, however once the kids know the rules and procedures the teacher can focus on teaching.

Constantly disciplining students takes more time away from teaching than the two weeks it takes to get the kids into the groove of rules and procedures.
