Sleep, Sleep, Sleep - No Junk Sleep

“All work and no play makes jack a dull boy” can be rephrased as “all play and no sleep makes jack a dull boy” for the purpose of highlighting the impacts of junk sleep on children. Junk sleep refers to the low quality and interrupted sleep pattern due to the increased interaction with electronic gadgets like smart phones, iPads, MP3 players, televisions, and computers while sleeping. By nature, children are inquisitive and adventurous. They are lured towards gadgets for playing games and watching videos.

Many children cherish the possession of their valuable electronic gadgets and tend to keep them at their bedside while sleeping. It is very common to see teenagers waking up in the middle of the night, when their friend sends a message or comments on his or her status on Facebook. The light and sound from the electronic devices disrupts the normal sleep cycle and affects several sleep related hormones like melatonin and serotonin.

Junk sleep increases appetite and leads to obesity. Obesity among children is not only a health concern but it also poses a serious psychological problems like low self confidence, stage fear, and more. Outdoor games help children keep their health and weight in check. Running and jumping strengthens muscles and keeps the body fit and free from ailments. Addicted to electronic gadgets, children get low exposure to outdoor games. The constant usage of gadgets can also lead to vision problems at a very young age. Children tend to become lazy and make hasty decisions on any number of issues.

Parents play a very important role in nurturing their children’s activities and hobbies. Pampering children with stuffs they desire needs restriction. Parents should make sure that no electronic gadgets are present in the bedroom at least one hour before going to sleep. Strict adherence to a regular sleeping pattern is needed. No compromises should be made even when children keep pestering their parents to stay awake late at night.

Encourage children to play outdoor games by enrolling them in some sports training academy to specialize in a game they like. Music, drawing, or dance are quality areas of focus if sports do not hold their interest. Make sure not to force them into anything which they don’t like. Try to use some time from their monotonous schedule that encourages them to play with other children and exercise their minds and bodies. This too will ensure a good night's sleep!
