Lemont High School Leads in Special Education
It is not an easy job to educate young children and help shape their futures. Only teachers and parents can understand the problems faced with this challenge. The situation gets even tougher when the children in question are ones with physical or mental disabilities. This is not because these children are any less capable of learning, but rather because of the challenges they have to face due to some of the limitations they face.
Lemont High School is one that is trying to take the lead in the world of special education with its Extended School Year program. Special education schools tend to try to make their courses more interactive for the students and focus on their individual skills. However, it is equally important to send children out into the real world so that they can learn to adapt to different situations. This helps to prepare them to for their futures as adults in society. That is exactly what Lemont High School is been doing for three years.
Students Working with Community Employers
The program has sent 29 special students to gain real life working experience with community employer partners. Working for about a month, from June 11 until July 2, students learn various things depending on which of the eight different employers they were grouped with. This type of programming sets Lemont High School apart as a leader in the world of special education.
Diverse Environments Mean More Exposure
Rather than sending all the students to the same place, the school sends them in groups to very different employers. Students work in places like farms, parks, the police department, the school itself, and many more. While each employer has them working on different types of projects, one thing was common, the students were made to interact with other people. This alone has many positive implications on the lives of these students.
Working in different environments helped students learn a variety of things. Every group comes together at the end of each day and shares their experiences and the skills they have learned to benefit all of the students.
Helping Children Decide their Future
This exercise has helped children know themselves and their own interests better. They now know what kind of work they prefer to do and where they can excel. This is important if they are to have a stable career in their lives.
The Franciscan Village has been one of the biggest supporters of this program. They have hired many people who were once part of the school’s program. They feel like the students are very professional to work with. They also tend to encourage students to interact more with people to help them better shape their social skills. Seeing the positive attitude from this employer, many students continue to work voluntarily with them even after the program is finished.
It is our duty to make all children with special needs feel like useful contributors to the society. The special education programs that schools offer are a very important factor in this. Lemont High School’s program is leading the way for other special education schools because it has recognized the fact that it is vital for students to face real life situations in order to learn how to cope with them.
