AIM for French
French is the second most common language in the world, after English. It is the mother tongue of over 75 million people, and many others speak it as a secondary language. French is also one of the two working languages of the UN, apart from being the official language of 32 countries of the world.
Seeing these statistics, it is only logical to teach children French in schools at an early age. Accelerative integrative methodology (AIM) is one of the best teaching methods being used for teaching French today.
An Introduction to AIM
AIM is a teaching method in which gestures, dance and music are used to help students learn a new language. To learn French, hundreds of gestures are used that correspond with different words. This model of education has been found to be exceptionally successful, as the young students in the AIM program have shown much better results than those in other teaching programs. This model of education is well suited for young children, and can also be modified for older students. Boys seem to respond much better to AIM because of their general attraction to a more hands-on approach to education.
AIM was developed by Canada’s Wendy Maxwell, and is being used by over 4000 Canadian schools right now to teach French. Student participation is encouraged, and the otherwise ‘boring’ grammar is made interesting by using poems and rap songs. Physical depiction of the language helps students learn it in an interactive and integrated way. This method allows students with varying learning curves and capabilities to learn synchronously with the class.

Using gestures enables the students to develop an emotional and cognitive bond with the language. It helps them make the language their own and understand its implications in daily life. The model developed for French includes all the keywords needed for basic communication.

Using techniques that are more interactive than the usual textbooks in the early stages of the learning cycle is the most effective way to teach children a new language. Some schools start as early as kindergarten to make young pupils aware of basic words and their gestures.
AIM was developed by its creator to teach her French students in a more immersive way when other conventional teaching methods failed. The AIM model is now being used in over 20 countries around the world, and for at least 4 different languages.

Using an applied approach, the students not only learn quicker but also remember what they have learned for the long term. This is helpful, as students will not be learning French just because it is a school course but because AIM makes it interesting and they actually want to learn the language and retain it.
